1.6 Students from private schools in Lakh were admitted to public schools in Delhi

New Delhi: About 2.4 lakh students studying at various private schools in Delhi have applied for admission to Delhi public schools for the 2021-22 school year. Applications for admission have been made from kindergarten to grade 12. Admission of more than 1.58 lakh of students has been completed. In contrast, principals of government schools say there have been more admissions to these 9th and 11th grades and they attribute the increase to the financial loss to parents due to the covid-19 pandemic.

According to data released by the Department of Education (DoE), 2,365,222 requests were received for Kindergarten to Grade 12 classes in approximately 1,030 public schools. So far 1,58,484 students have been admitted and the process is still ongoing. These data relate to pupils referred to as non-scheme admissions and pupils who were studying in private schools. However, data on out-of-regime admissions from last year has not been released. Tweeting about it, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said: “This is happening for the first time in India”.

This year, there were two cycles of admission sessions for non-regime admissions. The Delhi government has allowed private school students to be admitted to their schools even without a transfer certificate. In this regard, it was said that the ministry would automatically obtain the TC from the respective schools.

With this increase, the total number of students enrolled in Delhi public schools reached 17.67 lakh, according to the DoE. In 2020-2021, this figure was 16.28 lakh, while in 2019-20 it was around 15.05 lakh.
