Application forms can be found at schools to which parents and guardians wish to apply.

The documents needed to apply include:

  • Birth certificate (Note that baptismal certificates will not be considered proof of date of birth)
  • Vaccination card; and
  • Transfer card or last report card for learners who have been to school before.

Additional documents required if one is not a South African citizen are:

  • Study permit
  • Temporary or permanent residence permit from the Ministry of Interior; Where
  • Proof that you have applied for permission to remain in South Africa

The department said, “Apply early to ensure a strong start to your child’s school year.”

Parents/guardians are encouraged to apply to at least three schools, with the department explaining that this is important so that parents can reserve places for their children and that it “increases the child’s chances of
be placed in one of them, whether second or third choice”.

Once you submit your school application, you must then track applications three months after you submit your school applications.

Another piece of advice coming from the department was:

Avoid late applications, as they hinder your child’s learning…enroll their children early
in order to avoid the bureaucratic obstacles that late registration may present.

The department said that in previous years, the department faced issues admitting learners on the first day of school due to late registrations.

“Late applications deprive learners of their right to a quality education, as any learner who does not have a space on the first day, does not receive instruction for that day or the days before obtaining the space,” KZN MEC Education Kwazi Mshengu said.

Late admissions could also lead to overcrowding in schools, which is already a major problem in South African schools.

If the school’s application has been refused, then you are advised to approach the circuit office.

The 2023 school year is scheduled to start on January 18 and end on December 13 for schools in Kwazulu-Natal. However, these dates could change because the 2023 school calendar is not yet finalized.
