East Baton Rouge school system finds tactics to tackle nationwide teacher shortage problem
BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (BRPROUD) – The East Baton Rouge school system continues to search for teachers as the country faces a shortage of educators.
For Erin Keys, teaching in the midst of a pandemic is even more difficult with the continuing shortage of teachers.
“Teaching during COVID obviously isn’t easy, it hasn’t been easy for anyone in any profession,” said Erin Keys, a teacher at Sherwood Middle School.
The district hosted a mid-year job fair on Wednesday.
“The national teacher shortage, I think it’s been happening for a while, and then I think with the pandemic it has accelerated everything,” said Dana Morrison, recruiting manager, East Baton Rouge School System. “My objective today was, I wanted to recruit 13 either para-educators or teachers.
The district is moving people to schools with fewer teachers to meet demand. The greatest need is for special needs and ESL educators.
Cesar Rico heads the district’s ESL program. He is currently looking to fill up to ten positions.
“This is actually more than the normal amount, it is only for two different reasons. One, of course, the shortage, but another reason is also that we stress the importance of making sure that we have more. of staff in our school system to support our children, ”said Rico.
State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley says half of all teachers leave the profession after five years. 60 percent of teachers leave after a decade.
EBRSS offers programs for those who wish to change careers and those who wish to continue their education.
Executives hope more people will choose careers in education.
“Even if there is a shortage of teachers and you have to cover lessons every now and then, it’s still rewarding. At the end of the day, I think if you wanted to be an educator because you love kids it’s always worth it, for me that’s what I show up to at work every day, ”Keys said.
EBRSS is recruiting the following positions:
- Certified teachers
- Office staff
- Special education
