Erie Catholic school system appoints new president

The Erie Catholic School System Board has appointed a new president.

Bridget M. Philip has been appointed the new president of the Erie Catholic School System (ECSS).

Philip has been interim president since January 20 and will oversee the six schools in the system: Saint-Sacrement, Notre-Dame de la Paix, Saint-Georges, Saint-Jacques, Saint-Jude and Saint-Luc.

In addition to her role as Interim President, Philip retained her role as Vice President of Enrollment Management, a position she started in June 2019. Previously, she spent 17 years in administrative work at the Gannon University, where she held positions in continuing education and undergraduate admissions before becoming Director of Graduate Admissions and then Director of Global Admissions and Outreach.

“I am very grateful for the work of the Board of Directors and the dedicated Research Committee over the past few months,” said ECSS Board Chairman John Blakeslee. “There is no doubt that Bridget is the right person to lead ECSS. The depth and breadth of her previous experience is important, but she has also demonstrated an understanding of the needs of the position and her ability to meet those needs in a professional and collaborative manner.

Jim Gallagher, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Erie, commented: “I have been very impressed with Bridget’s leadership this year. She is decisive and focused on the important issues; she listens well and is open to new ideas. In addition, her faith is evident and she leads with integrity. I am happy to see that she has the full support of the board and principals, and I look forward to continuing our work together.

Philip, her husband Brian, and their family attend Mount Calvary Parish, Erie. Their daughter is in third grade at St. James School.

“The opportunity to work for a Catholic faith-based organization has always been a part of my professional career,” said Philip. “The call to work for the Catholic school system in Erie is reinforced by the opportunity to work with principals and colleagues who share a common goal in their desire to provide our schools with academic excellence, strong moral character and a zeal for service to others. The Erie Catholic school system is a growing organization and I look forward to sharing our advancement with the Erie community.
