Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) 2023 Grade 1 & 8 Admission Now Open

Today, parents in Gauteng will begin submitting applications to the provincial Department of Education to secure placement of their children in schools of their choice. These apps apply to learners starting grades 1 and 8 in 2023.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) says it is ready for the upcoming school application season. This is because the department’s online system will be open for Years 1 and 8 from July 22, 2022 and will close on August 19, 2022.

Parents can apply online at Alternatively, parents can visit one of the 47 decentralized walk-in centers if they need help submitting applications.

Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi assured parents that improvements have been made to the admissions website, making it easier for parents to use and submit applications. A notable improvement will allow parents to register on the admissions site without all the required documents. This was not possible in previous years.

Additional enhancements will allow parents to enter their ID numbers and their other information (Last Name + First Name) will be automatically populated in the required fields.

Parents will also be able to use their live location as an address reference point. This makes it easier to apply to schools located in the food zone of your home.

The system can accept 40,000 individual requests at any one time. This is important because many parents will now be able to submit requests at the same time without running the risk of losing their progress if the system goes down.

“We’ve tried to move with the times to be pretty upfront and make sure it’s a smart process that can really accept applications so I’m inviting parents tomorrow morning at eight o’clock please join us and you’ll enjoy the journey with us,” Lesufi said.

Required Documents for Gauteng School Applications

  • Parent-Child ID Card or Passport or Refugee Permit or Asylum Seeker Permit or Permanent Residence Permit or Study Permit
  • South African birth certificate
  • Proof of address
  • Proof of work address

A clinic card/vaccination card or immunization card is required for Grade 1 applications, while the latest report card is required for Grade 8 applications.

In the past, the GDE received a large number of applications for specific in-demand schools. These high-pressure schools receive many more applications than they have places available.

Lesufi says these schools will receive increased funding in the coming years to build additional classrooms. This will help ease the pressure on these schools.
