JUST IN: APS closed Thursday, citing other school system closures | ARLnow
(Updated at 8:55 p.m.) Arlington Public Schools will be closed tomorrow because, according to the APS, other school systems are also closed.
In an email to families, APS said local streets were being cleared of snow and the school could open, but the previously announced closure of other Northern Virginia school systems — like Fairfax County, Alexandria and Prince William County — would have an impact on staffing.
Thursday’s closure could mean a whole week of snow days for beleaguered students and parents, immediately following the winter break. Forecasters say 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected Thursday evening and Friday morning, which will likely lead to more closures.
More APS:
All APS schools and offices will be closed on Thursday, January 6. Arlington’s main and neighborhood roads are clear and our schools are ready; however, due to the closure of most neighboring school divisions and the impact of these closures on our staff, APS will also be closed on Thursday, January 6, 2022.
Unless instructed otherwise by their supervisors, janitorial and maintenance staff must report to work on time. After-school activities, games, team practices, field trips, adult education classes, and programs in schools and on school grounds are cancelled. Earlier today, around 4:45 p.m., APS announced via social media that it would be open again on Thursday. After tonight’s announcement, he apologized for taking the plunge.
Due to staff shortages and the closures of most school divisions, we are closed on Thursday. We apologize for this tweet. We (and the panda) were excited to see the students return on Thursday.
