Man arrested for falsifying medical school admission points

A Durban man is set to appear in court on charges of fraud for allegedly altering his matric certificate points 12 years ago to gain admission to medical school.

The 29-year-old from Imbilo is due to appear in Durban Commercial Crimes Court on May 31, 2022.

“It is alleged that the suspect falsified his matric certificate and altered passing scores to gain admission to the university in 2010,” Hawks spokesman Simphiwe Mhlongo said.

The medical school discovered the fraudulent certificate four years after he began his studies.

“While he was in his fourth year of medical school, it was discovered that he had used a fraudulent certificate,” Mhlongo added in a statement.

Hawks investigating

A case of fraud was reported at Umbilo police station which led to his arrest.

“The matter has been tentatively withdrawn and the investigation has been taken over by the Hawks’ Durban Serious Business Crimes investigation,” Mhlongo concluded.
